Backlit Photos

Place tool on lightboard with the index marker visible. More photos from varied angles gives the best composite for tools with real height or depth — the grid handles alignment across shots, so there's no need to limit the count. For flat, low-profile items, fewer photos (even just one) works fine. Check each silhouette looks clean before continuing.

After capture, check the silhouette preview. Retake if the bezel corners aren't all visible.

HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH
1 · Camera Setup
Turn on your camera's monochrome filter. Set exposure to around −2 EV as a starting point, then fine-tune from there until the grid lines are clearly visible in the frame.
2 · Place the Marker
Set the index marker about 25mm from the tool — usually at its NW corner.
3 · Frame Each Shot
Center the camera on the opposite end of the tool from the marker, then zoom in until the marker sits within about one marker-width of the edge of the frame.
4 · Shooting Order
Take your first shot centered directly over the tool (straight down). Then move to the 12 o'clock position on the tool's profile and work your way clockwise around it, reframing per Step 3 as you go.
5 · Select & Submit
Shoot all of your backlit photos first. Back in the app, select every one of them at once from your gallery — then capture the thumbnail last.
6 · How Many Photos?
Flat, low-profile tools need surprisingly few — a single well-framed shot can already produce a clean cutout. There's no real downside to shooting more though: 6–10 gives the system extra angles to fill in gaps automatically, and tools with real height or undercuts likely need that many or more to come out clean.
